6/29/2023 0 Comments Os x openzfs el capitan![]() (That's probably a better spot to learn about OpenZFS than around here, FWIW.) Based on some of what's posted in the general thread, it looks like some folks have gotten Time Machine targets working with per-user datasets using OpenZFS, which is a reasonable way to configure this. If you really want OpenZFS on macOS, check with the OpenZFS folks directly - see how many folks are using it, what sorts of questions and problems they might be having, and such. If you are on macOS Sierra (10.12) or OS X El Capitan, you should remove kext-dev-mode from your boot-args to avoid confusion. Adding OpenZFS just adds another piece to that effort. Note that as of OS X El Capitan, kext-dev-mode is obsolete and does nothing. A file system is a key part of any operating system configuration. Networking, DNS, mail, whatever else you're going to be using. With a server in general and an add-on file system in particular, you're going to be dealing with whatever might go sideways with the configuration. When APFS arrives, I'm expecting that'll all migrate across to the new file system, too. They also target these sorts of extensive OS-level customizations, too.Īs for the general configuration, I routinely work with HFS+ on large external arrays with configurations from the teens to most of the way to fifty terabytes, and - once the array hardware is configured and stabilized and the RAID-6 is built - it all just works. These are all fine operating systems, and each has a rather larger installed base of folks using ZFS than does macOS. Alternatively, possibly on a dedicated network-attached storage box. If experimentation and a custom configuration and more general experience with ZFS is your goal, then I'd (without intending any snark) suggest trying ZFS with Linux or BSD or - since you're interested in ZFS - illumos here, and not macOS. ![]() If you're looking to run a server without dealing with integration and testing and anything that creeps in around your add-on file system or with issues or incompatibilities that might arise over macOS or Server.app upgrades, then OpenZFS might not be the best path. ![]() Apple is headed in a different direction from ZFS with their APFS support that was announced with macOS Sierra. I kind of expected this, with the new SIP protections an all, but here's the installation log: short brew cask install openzfs > Downloading. ![]()
